The President of Claritiva Software is kidnapped at gunpoint. FBI Special Agent Cliff Knowles is the first to respond when the crime is reported. But the report is suspicious in many ways and the front office is skeptical that the kidnapping is real. Knowles must fight his own bureaucracy while trying to rescue the victim and catch the kidnappers. This gripping novel will have you on the edge of your chair from the first chapter.

The author, a retired 25-year FBI veteran Special Agent, draws heavily on his experiences working high-technology and violent crimes cases in Silicon Valley to provide an unprecedentedly candid look at what it is like to work a high-profile kidnap case and what a kidnapping victim experiences. If you have considered becoming an FBI agent, or you have wondered what you would face as a kidnap victim and the decisions you would have to make, this book is a must-read. This is the real story, not the TV version you've seen a thousand times. It isn't always pretty, but it is what happens when lives are at stake

Held for Ransom Cliff Knowles Mysteries Book 1 eBook Russell Atkinson

Based on a true story from the 1990's, Carl Fischer, the President of Claritiva Software is kidnapped. Carl is a multi-millionaire and the kidnappers quickly demand a ransom payment from his family. As the FBI becomes involved, the agents cannot agree if a kidnapping has really taken place. This book reads more like a documentary than a fictional novel. If you want to know how the FBI really solves cases, this is the book for you as the author gives a play by play description.

The author tells a complete story of investigation from start to finish. At times, the writing style seemed dry and emotionless. But the more I read, the more I was amazed at the details of an FBI case that were revealed. The more familiar I became with all the abbreviations, SAC, CLETS, CII, etc, the more comfortable I became with the writing style. I was astonished at the number of agents that were involved in one case. I felt like I knew Special Agent Cliff Knowles, who, to me, seemed to be the lead investigator. It was interesting to see how investigators work with each other and how sometimes, an investigation can be just one big cluster muck!

This book was very well edited, almost no errors at all. I can't say that I was sitting on the edge of my seat throughout, but I can say that I did enjoy the read! I learned a lot and enjoyed the story. I definitely recommend this as a great "documentary" on FBI procedures and a good read as well!

Held for Ransom Cliff Knowles Mysteries Book 1 eBook Russell Atkinson Reviews

Russ Atkinson's book was a fun read and especially for the various characters portrayed both inside and outside of the FBI RA offices! I was especially impressed with the character development of the agents. The dynamic between the working street agents vs supervisors created a consistent tension throughout the book. Just the right touch to make it "real" .
This is a fascinating book. Once I started it I could not put it down until I got to the end. While the characters are no doubt a product of the author's imagination it would not take a real stretch of belief to picture them in real life. I understand the author is a retired Agent. He must have worked with some real fascinating people. What a story.

Enjoyed this story from the first word to the last! The plot had enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. Recommend this to any mystery lover!
The strength of this book is that the author was an FBI agent and writes from a realistic point of view, which may be difficult for some readers since they are used to TV or movies portrayals of the FBI. I was an FBI agent for 24 years and the feel of this book is a matter-of-fact approach to FBI investigations. It is not full of the drama that most are used to reading in traditional detective fiction. Instead, you will follow the agent through the pain-staking details that are needed to solve FBI cases. Good read for those who want a behind-the-scenes look at how the FBI operates.
An interesting insight to the functioning of the FBI and it layers of hierarchy. If what was written is a true representation of the FBI operation it wS difficult to follow with all of the three lettered offices, positions, and levels of authority. If other government operations run as the FBI does it is no wonder that America is in trouble due to the likes of the IRS, State Dept., EPA and the DOJ. It seemed to depict how a person at one level could not act without full approval of his boss rather than just doing the correct thing.
The investigation leading to the culprit was a testament to the FBI always gets its man.
I geocache so I was hesitant to buy this because so few people truly know what it is that we do but a friend who also geocaches egged me on. After reading it....I'm VERY glad I bought it. I have more of this series on my "to get" list. Once I started reading I simply couldn't put the tablet down. The author understands geocaching, the quirks of the hobby, and he can spin a really good story, too.

A Review of "Held for Ransom"
by Anthony T. Riggio

I ordered "Held for Ransom" by Russsell Atkinson, edition, from couple of days ago and could not wait to get started on it, having heard it promoted by some friends.

The story is about the kidnapping of a Silicon Valley executive and a demand for ransom before his being released.

The book was written by a retired FBI agent who quite obviously worked kidnappings and was probably assigned, at one time, to an FBI satellite office of the San Francisco office of the FBI.

I thought the plot and the story were well developed and presented but believed that if I were among the uninitiated in matters of law enforcement, I would have been lost on all the careful explanations of how the FBI operated, almost down to the smallest detail.

I have to believe this work was to a degree somewhat autobiographical and the author went to great trouble in describing the characters in the story. He did a pretty good job and one could not help seeing the competence of some and the character and careerist flaws in others.

The head of the FBI office in San Francisco was a very poor leader and that if there were any positive resolves, they were not due to either his level of experience or leadership. He was the boss, everyone of any ability, loved to hate. His incompetence was manifest even to include the character of his secretary.

The story was very interesting and presented real life issues FBI agents face in their daily work activities. It also gave a glimpse of the fraternity shared by those working the "street" work and the ideals of those with promotion ambitions. It seems, however, that only the non ambitious were filled with the integrity and work ethic the public holds deep in the recesses of their thoughts of the FBI, at least, based on the movies and TV which seem to portray them as "saints" and "heroes". There was definitely a conflict between the hero of this story and upper management in the FBI. It also touched upon the age old complaint local police departments have about the FBI and their hesitancy to share information.

When life and death are in the balance, it seems the author believes only the FBI can effectively handle the situation and while there may be good reasons to adhere to this belief, it sometimes slows down or hampers an investigation.

I have to say, I liked the book and it held my interest for the two days I devoted to reading it and I would recommend it to my friends and associates.
